PDR – 2024 Year in Review

Dear clients, partners, and friends,

As we reach the end of 2024, it is once again a good opportunity to reflect on our achievements and learning over the past year, and to provide our perspective on the year to come.

2024 was a year of high activity both inside PDR and more significantly within the Egeria open source project – the result of which is helping us change our focus for 2025.  Egeria has matured significantly in the last year with the following three releases:

  • Version 5.0 (July 2024)
    • Simplified up and running, no configuration required
    • Introduction of Surveys to easily explore and assess artifacts, empowering users to selectively catalog and govern the most relevant to them.
    • Survey actions for Files, Folders, Atlas, JDBC
    • Introduction of a python client, pyegeria
    • Content packs to simplify connectivity
    • Digital product support
  • Version 5.1 (October 2024)
    • Synchronization with Unity Catalog (both Commercial and Open Source)
    • New content packs for connectors, templates and reference data
    • Updated support for Open Lineage connectors
    • New Runtime Manager View service for managing the Egeria runtime
    • ‘hey_egeria’ CLI (command line interface) for general, technical, and operations users.
    • Egeria Workspaces for Data Engineers and Scientists – pre-built environments using Docker Compose and Jupyter.
  • Version 5.2 (December 2024)
    • Generation of Mermaid Markdowns to support visualization of governance processes, assets, and relationships.
    • Enhanced support for secrets store connectors to enable secure connections to resources including on the cloud
    • Pre-built governance processes to further simplify surveying and cataloging
    • New open metadata native repository based on PostgreSQL to simplify production operations
    • Support for Unity Catalog release 0.3.0
    • Query performance enhancements
    • Additions to CLI – currently over 70 commands.

In the last year we have made it significantly easier to get started with Egeria, to interact with Egeria (without programming) and to use Egeria with other technologies (such as Unity Catalog). While there is always more to be done, we feel that our progress this year makes Egeria simpler for enterprises to use.

Following the December V5.2 release of Egeria, we will be shifting our focus more to Governance Consultancy and Education along with supporting production rollouts of Egeria based projects. We will of course continue to move both the Egeria code and its associated community forward.

Establishing control over, and value from, the ever-increasing volumes of data, remains a significant and growing need in many companies.  We continue to provide deep experience in this area to help your teams to be successful, and to help avoid many pitfalls that exist.

As the business landscape evolves, we continue to engage in thought leadership projects with, for example, the IEEE, Royal Academy of Engineering and the Institution of Engineering Designers to understand, recommend and advise on the impacts of AI and other new technologies.

In 2025, we look forward to working with you in pursuit of these objectives, your success in these projects is our success, and our goal is always to leave you in a better position to be both successful and self-reliant allowing you to deliver quantifiable business value from all your projects in this space.

Our thanks for your support and encouragement in 2024 and our best wishes to you and yours over the holidays and through 2025.
